Central European University brings together students and faculty from some hundred countries to address the most vexing problems of the 21st century. The university was founded in 1991, at a time of great upheaval, as communism crumbled and democracy triumphed. More than two decades later, it remains strong and unwavering in its commitment to an open society, and is known for excellence in teaching and research with purpose. At the core of its mission lies a set of principles: the pursuit of truth wherever it leads, respect for the diversity of cultures and peoples, and commitment to resolve differences through debate not denial.

CEU is accredited in both the U.S. and Hungary, and offers English-language master’s and doctoral programs in the social sciences, the humanities, law, management and public policy.  Located in downtown Budapest, the vibrant and stunning capital city that has always been a crossroads between East and West, it combines the comparative study of the region’s historical, cultural and social diversity with a global perspective on good governance, sustainable development and social transformation.

The institution has earned global recognition for a variety of programs, including political science, international relations, philosophy and sociology, and continues to invest in exciting new fields such as big data, cognitive science and network science. Within the region, many of CEU’s programs enjoy premier status, including business and law. It offers three two-year Erasmus Mundus master’s programs in partnership with leading European institutions: in public policy, environmental sciences, policy and management, and women’s and gender studies.

CEU’s diverse student body is its best asset. Its outstanding 8:1 student/faculty ratio ensures a dynamic environment for academic collaboration and debate. The university strives to maintain a student-oriented academic culture, drawing on the wealth of knowledge and perspectives that its multicultural community provides. In line with its mission, CEU is committed to attracting talented students and scholars from around the world, and provides generous scholarships available to students from any country.

Its more than 15,000 alumni live in 136 countries, and include EU and national parliamentarians, ambassadors, UN officers, policymakers, business leaders, academics and human rights activists. Many of them have taken their global perspective back to their home countries. An alumna is now the second CEU graduate to head the Romanian Justice Ministry, while another advises Iraqi government officials on public policy development, implementation and evaluation. Yet another was the first woman of Roma origin to be elected to the European Parliament.
