June 1, 2020

PCDN is proud to partner with leading innovator, scholar, lawyer and author, Flynn Coleman, who recently published the groundbreaking book A Human Algorithm: How Artificial Intelligence is Redefining Who We Are.

The book is a brilliant read that urges students and professionals from all backgrounds, including social impact sectors to learn about AI,  and engage in the essential ethical, policy and technical debates about how this technology is increasingly influencing our societies. Automated decision-making is playing an increasing role in our daily lives from decisions around hiring, finances, to allowing the evolution of  "smart" self-driving cars and the soon to be  widespread presence of automated weapons. The technology is unleashing a wave of innovation that can play a positive role in the world or lead to widespread negative applications of that leads to a decrease in freedoms, human autonomy and embeds widespread surveillance and discrimination in our institutions.

It is time for all of us to work for the ethical use of AI in order to help address many of the deep-rooted key problems facing people and the planet in the 21st century. A Human Algorithm is one of the top reads to start with on this journey, as the author provides an eloquent, deeply insightful text that provides the solid foundations to begin this journey.

As  David Eagleman, a neuroscientist at Stanford University and author of The Brain: The Story of You comments about the text:

What does artificial intelligence mean, where is it going, and how will it affect us? We’re currently on a very steep part of the technology curve, and Flynn Coleman is a wonderfully astute, perceptive, and reliable guide as we ascend into our future.

PCDN was delighted to recently interview Flynn for our Social Change Career Podcast.

You can listen to the episode ( don't worry there are no spoiler alerts).
