As a white guy, I know I’m relatively secure in today’s world. But I have family, friends, and colleagues from all walks of life—trans, refugees, people from diverse backgrounds—and watching these election results, the future feels bleak. It’s infuriating that in a global economy nearing $100 trillion, we’re still fighting for basic dignity and safety for so many. For some, security is a given; for others, it’s a constant struggle.
It’s okay to feel everything—rage, sadness, exhaustion, to binge on Netflix, or catch up on sleep. This work is hard. But hoping and acting are our resistance (thanks to Flynn Coleman for the idea).
Fierce cooperation is what we need: real, consistent work that channels resources to those on the front lines, amplifies overlooked voices, and supports communities pushing for change. It may feel like power is too entrenched, but real change can and does happen. It’s in the daily slog of people and organizations who refuse to give up and keep believing in a better future.
Change happens in community, through action, hope, and a willingness to learn. If there’s one thing I hope might come out of this election (though I’m not optimistic), it’s more humility. The U.S. has as many challenges as any other country, and if we can stop seeing ourselves as “the best” and learn from others, it would be a huge step forward. I’m not holding my breath, but I’ll keep hoping that positive forces for change will strengthen at all levels.
