Our peace and conflict studies master’s program is small, comprehensive, and rigorous. Our students have the advantages of an active learning community that includes proximity to world-renowned research faculty and seasoned practitioners based in Washington D.C. We mentor students individually and build cohorts while leveraging all the best that Georgetown offers.
Our curriculum features skills-based training. We emphasize hard skills such as research methods, program design, and monitoring and evaluation. At the same time, we ensure that students learn the soft skills necessary for professional peace work, such as teamwork, networking, and community building. Additionally, our required coursework includes training in the core dialogue skills of the field: negotiation, mediation, and facilitation. Through a partnership with San Francisco’s Community Boards, the oldest community-based mediation center in the United States, students can opt to obtain a certification in mediation.
Experiential learning is a key component of our degree requirements. Students deepen their learning by applying in the world what they learn in the classroom. This insight steers our approach to teaching conflict resolution. Our students follow a sequence of experiential courses, which consists of two guided field experiences. Our Practicum guides students through a professional experience as conflict resolution consultants. Over the summer term, our master’s students complete placements in the field for degree credit through our Summer Field Fellowship. In this way, students gain experience in the state-of-the-art of practice, build applicable skills, and network in their area of professional interest. This valuable training can aid our students in raising their competitiveness in our field’s niche job market.
Our degree progression is designed to be completed by students, in person and on a full-time basis, in sixteen months. Our students earn their master’s degree by completing 34 credit-hours of coursework over four consecutive semesters. We are currently accepting applications for Fall 2026 admissions.
