On April 27th our next webinar will be on Interviewing in the Social Sector, Key Tips for Landing the Job.

The session will feature three outstanding professionals in the social sector who will share their wisdom regarding what is most effective in interviewing for positions. In particular they will discuss what are key strategies for candidates to best prepare for interviews, what organizations seek in hiring top talent, and trends in the field. There will also be an open discussion section for attendees to get answers to some of your top questions.

Our speakers include:

Surabhi Lal, Career Services Director at NYU Robert F. Wagner School of Public Service has guided hundreds of new and experienced professionals on their journeys to meaningful careers. Along the way, she translates the unwritten rules of a job search to be more transparent. As a coach and a manager she strives to bring out the best in individuals and teams. She knows that career decisions impact many facets of one’s life and reflects often on the intersection of values, identity, and career.


Akin Martins joined the Open Society Foundations as a Global Recruitment Partner in October 2015. He currently manages recruitment for both Thematic and Regional Programs; including the Open Society Justice Initiative, The Africa Regional office, the Asia Pacific Regional office, Open Society Initiative for Europe and the Open Society European Policy Institute. He manages recruitment across OSF’s hub offices in New York, London, Brussels, Budapest and Barcelona.

Prior to joining OSF, he was a Resource Manager at Capgemini UK working on various projects to manage resource utilization and deployment. Most of his Recruitment and Resource Management background before OSF have been in the Pharmaceutical and Information Technology sectors.

He holds a Bachelor’s Degree in Philosophy and a Master’s Degree in Human Resource Management from the University of Durham. He is currently studying for his CIPD level 7 qualification.


Cheryl Saferstein is a recruiter with the global human resources team at the United States Institute of Peace (USIP). In this capacity, Cheryl coordinates full life-cycle recruitment with USIP hiring managers (for DC and overseas positions); administers USIP’s research assistant and research visa programs; and provides broad HR operations support. Cheryl previously served on USIP’s Executive Office and Outreach teams, where she managed events, arranged programming for student groups, and supported USIP's 2013 strategic planning process. Cheryl holds a Bachelors of Arts in International Relations from American University (AU) and is certified as a “Teacher of English as a Foreign (Second) Language.”
