The Georgetown University M.A. in Conflict Resolution offers the cutting edge of professional preparation for careers in peace and social justice.  The program includes a theoretically rigorous core curriculum, skills taught by top practitioners, and extensive experiential learning opportunities. We prepare students to resolve conflict in a turbulent world.

Building on Georgetown’s commitment to social justice and academic excellence, the Conflict Resolution program focuses on conflict locally and globally. A core principle of our program is Utraque Unum, Latin for “both into one,” and Georgetown’s motto. Utraque Unum speaks to our drive to reconcile, bring together diverse points of view, and create understanding.

The program is small, specialized, and skills-based. Students have the advantages of an active learning community, world-renowned research faculty, and top practitioners in the field. Our small size allows us to mentor students individually and build a close community while taking advantage of all the best of what the university has to offer.

Georgetown’s M.A. in Conflict Resolution features skills-based training. We emphasize hard skills such as program design, monitoring and evaluation. At the same time, we ensure that students learn the soft skills necessary for professional peace work, such as intercultural communication, networking, writing, and lifelong learning. Students learn relevant skills through weekend-intensive skills courses taught by expert practitioners.

The core skills of the field are required for all our students: negotiation, mediation and facilitation. Through a partnership with San Francisco’s Community Boards, the oldest community-based mediation center in the United States, students can also opt to earn certification in mediation.

Experiential learning is a key component of the Conflict Resolution Program. Students learn best through active engagement with their subjects rather than passive consumption. This insight guides our approach to teaching peace. Our students follow a three-semester experiential series, guided work experience that deepens learning through application.

The Conflict Resolution Practicum series guides students through a professional experience as conflict resolution entrepreneurs. Students work with an outside organization on a concrete deliverable, under the supervision and guidance of Conflict Resolution faculty. In this way, students gain experience in the state of the art of practice, build applicable skills, and network in their area of interest.

Over the summer term, our master’s students work in a field-based, program-funded Summer Field Fellowship. Placements can be international or domestic. The experience offers students opportunities to engage in relevant practice and apply skills learned during their studies. Students are able to gain the field experience that gives them an edge on the job market.

The new program requires 34 credit-hours of coursework. Full time students can complete these requirements with four consecutive semesters of classes, including the summer semester. We are currently accepting applications for the incoming class of fall 2021. Apply by January 15, 2021!
