The PhD in International Conflict Management in the School of Conflict Management, Peacebuilding and Development at Kennesaw State University (KSU) has students from around the world, creating a dynamic, yet intimate, educational environment. Doctoral students, after completing core courses, are given the flexibility to focus their studies in their desired areas. International Conflict Management is a field that currently has few opportunities for advanced education. KSU is a leading institution with one of the few independent schools of conflict and peacebuilding in the world.

Program Sections

Core Seminars

The core seminars provide interdisciplinary grounding in the fundamental theoretical concepts, epistemology, ethical and cultural foundations, and practical applications in international conflict management and resolution. 

Research Methods

Preparation includes courses in research design, program evaluation, and how to use quantitative and qualitative methods. 

Customized Concentrations

Students can personalize their disciplines with a wide array of electives focused in the students' areas of interest. Students may also practice their conflict management skills in applied international settings to gain an understanding of today's complex challenges marked by globalization.

 

Program of Study
The PhD in International Conflict Management is comprised of a total of 75 credit hours including at least 60 course credits and up to 15 required dissertation credits. Eligible students can have up to 17 related credits transferred in from their Master's degree.

Peacebuilding & Development Courses (6 credit Hours)
Choice of International Negotiation; Peacebuilding Assessment; Essentials of Mediation; Non-Violent Resistance; Disarmament, Demobilization, and Reintegration; Transnational Civil Society; Sustainable Development; International Political Economy

Program Curricular Electives (26 credit Hours)
Over 25 courses to choose from for program electives

Dissertation Research (up to 15 credit Hours)
Independent research and dissertation writing under the direction of a professor.

Research and Career Opportunities

Each doctoral student, after completing the core courses, is given the flexibility to focus their studies in their desired area. The ability to drive their curriculum in the direction of their dissertation and region allows them to further their expertise in their academic discipline. PhD in International Conflict Management graduates are prepared to compete for tenure-track university faculty appointments and a wide range of operational positions in government, non-governmental agencies, and the global private sector.

Funding

We provide assistantships and a limited number of competitive fellowships each year. Students offered an assistantship are funded in the amount of $15,000 per year. Program funding consists of grants, fellowships, Graduate Research Assistantships (GRAs), and Graduate Teaching Assistantships (GTAs) to support the research and teaching responsibilities of the program faculty, contributing departments, and university.

Document showing the chronological progression of the applicant's educational and work experiences including any additional relevant information.

Recommendation Letters
Three letters of recommendation. 

Additional Requirements for International Students
All applicants who are not native speakers of English must take the TOEFL or the IELTS.
