Named one of the top international affairs programs by the Foreign Policy Association, the Julien J. Studley Graduate Program in International Affairs (SGPIA) is distinctive in the New School tradition: critical, engaged, and iconoclastic.
Students in SGPIA gain a truly global and multidisciplinary perspective on international issues. They learn from professionals with years of experience at leading organizations including the UN, the World Bank, and the International Rescue Committee and from scholars with backgrounds in anthropology, sociology, political science, media, and economics. The faculty range from authors and activists to photographers and documentary filmmakers.
NEW APPROACHES FOR A NEW KIND OF INTERNATIONAL AFFAIRS
As a student in this program, you’ll address global problems using innovative tools such as geographic information systems, media research and advocacy, and participatory design and assessment. Our renowned faculty of scholar-practitioners will help you to go beyond the status quo, pushing you to understand social, political, and economic dynamics to foster change at a grassroots level.
TAILOR THE PROGRAM TO YOUR INTERESTS
The SGPIA offers five concentrations, in which students can link theory, social research, and practice as they build careers as scholars and practitioners:
The program offers a variety of opportunities for applied learning through practice-oriented courses, including the United Nations Summer Study, and the summer International Field Program. For example, in the summer of 2017, SGPIA students participating in the International Field Program traveled to Cuba to witness and observe the country’s profound transformation, uncertain yet pressing expectations, and the need to redesign its economic and political paradigms.

The SGPIA welcomes applicants from all walks of life, including working professionals in related fields, career changers, and recent college graduates.

Both programs can be completed full-time or part-time and enable students to combine field-based learning with focused study in their area of interest.
