The team responsible for UNDP's recent 'Journey to Extremism in Africa' report certainly deserve credit for collecting such a large sample of respondents from groups such as Boko Haram and al-Shabaab. However, as I outline in the attached note, in other ways their report also substantially misleads its readers, both because certain aspects of its methodology are simply unsound, and as the findings are presented with unwarranted degrees of confidence in light of issues with sampling and data reliability. The CVE / PVE community must become better-informed consumers of such research, able to demand that key studies meet suitable standards.
