The events of 2020—a global pandemic, climate change, rising populism and extremism, police killings of black and brown people—are laying bare inequalities that have long plagued the global community. The Kroc Institute for International Peace Studies has engaged issues of peace and justice around the world for close to 35 years. We believe that studying and building peace is more important than ever.

The Master’s Degree in International Peace Studies launched by the Kroc Institute at Notre Dame in 1987, and now part of the Master of Global Affairs (MGA) program at the University of Notre Dame’s Keough School, has developed distinctive commitments that define our character and a global alumni network of peacebuilders located in over 100 countries around the world.

To address the challenges of 2020 and the years ahead, the Master of Global Affairs, International Peace Studies (IPS) concentration offers a peacebuilding curriculum with a number of distinguishing characteristics:

  • The normative focus of our program is central: commitment to the common good, to integral human development, to peacebuilding, and to justice and human flourishing.
  • The international and experiential diversity of our student body is one of the most salient aspects of our program. Each year 75% of international peace studies students come from outside the United States and arrive having been shaped by a variety of disciplinary backgrounds and life experiences.
  • Financial support in the form of full scholarships and living expense stipends is available to all accepted IPS students, enabling students of all economic backgrounds to participate in this excellent educational experience and to learn from one another.
  • The multidisciplinary nature of peace studies allows us to connect faculty and students from diverse academic disciplines—including, but not limited to, history, law, psychology, engineering, political science, theology, sociology, and anthropology—in the study of the causes of violence and paths to peace.
  • The importance of linking theory and practice led to the development of the Kroc Institute’s distinctive 6-month field experience, which allows students to integrate their learnings and reflective practice in professional peacebuilding settings.
  • More than 1,800 graduates now form the Kroc Institute’s professional peacebuilding network. Spanning countries from Afghanistan to Zimbabwe, Kroc Institute alumni are able to connect with each other to share resources, questions, job postings, connections, and opportunities to network around the world.

Kroc Institute alumni make an impact at every level: from grassroots community organizing to international policymaking. Their work addresses issues including human rights, racial justice, international development, environmental sustainability and climate change, conflict transformation, and more.

Apply today to the Master of Global Affairs, International Peace Studies program and join our network of alumni working worldwide to advance justice and advocate for sustainable peace.
