The 'Disconnect Model' of Violent Extremism

This 'Disconnect Model' offers a corrective to various prominent radicalization frameworks that fail to incorporate the critical disjuncture between attitudes and behaviors, including most variants of the 'pyramid' and 'staircase' models. While individuals who are supportive of violent extremism are more likely to become involved in its creation, many who contribute directly to this violence are un-supportive of its ostensible aims. Conversely, many who do support this violence are not directly involved in its creation. While this key disconnect has been observed by high-profile thematic specialists such as Randy Borum, John Horgan and Marc Sageman, our collective understanding of violent extremism continues to stall partly as research on this topic still invariably conflates attitudes and behaviors.
