Remote
fellowship | full-time | part-time | remote

Description

Summary

As a Fellow or Strategist at cFactual, you will drive impactful client projects focused on AI safety, effective altruism (EA) meta, or other cause areas aligned with your experience. You will execute high-quality work independently, support organizations in prioritization and effectiveness, and contribute to cFactual's growth and strategic direction. Successful candidates will have relevant experience in AI safety, EA meta, or other EA cause areas, as well as a commitment to impact maximization. We are excited to hire people to join us permanently (as a Strategist) or as a Fellow participating in our 3–6 month fellowship program. Fellows will spend 70-90% of their time doing value-adding client or cFactual work, while the rest of their time is reserved for upskilling and career exploration (e.g., one-on-one coaching sessions, goal-setting exercises, introductions to experts in the field, and self-directed learning through recommended EA resources and literature). The aim of the fellowship is to help you land your next impactful role, whether that be continuing at cFactual as a Strategist or joining another organization. You can find more information about the fellowship here.

About the role

As part of a dynamic start-up, your role will be entrepreneurial and strategic. Successful candidates will be responsible for delivering excellent client work and also contributing to cFactual's development. We expect that most of the impact of this role will come from your influence on our joint trajectory and accelerating your personal development.

We are looking to hire several people, as we are currently experiencing strong demand in the following domains (roughly in order of priority):

  2. EA meta: e.g., helping define an outreach strategy for EA or setting up the board of a think tank
  3. Others: e.g., generalists or experts in other cause areas, such as biosecurity and family office philanthropy. We will only work on Global Health & Development and Farmed Animal Welfare opportunistically in the next year

Additionally, we are looking for candidates with functional expertise in our service areas, especially in impact measurement, risk management, and strategy development for start-ups.

We are excited to hire people to join us permanently or to complete a fellowship. Fellows spend 70-90% of their time doing value-adding client or cFactual work and have the rest of their time for upskilling and career exploration. You can find more information about the fellowship here.

    2. Lead the implementation and improvement of selected processes, protocols, and policies to help optimize the organization's daily operations
    3. Help run a hiring round to grow the team
    4. Help shape a mindful, caring, humble, and ambitious working culture

Please note that we encourage you to apply even if you don't meet all requirements. If you're passionate about our mission and believe you have relevant skills and experience, we'd love to hear from you.

Requirements

  • At least 1 year of experience at a leading strategy consulting firm (e.g., BCG, Bain, or McKinsey), an EA or EA-adjacent organization, or another relevant institution, in a strategy or operations role
  • A strong interest in and knowledge of EA meta, AI safety, or another relevant cause area, with a nuanced understanding of key challenges and opportunities

Nice to have

  • Deep functional experience in EA
    • Experience in applying EA frameworks to prioritize and evaluate cause areas, interventions, and organizations
    • Experience generating theories of change, performing impact measurement, and developing risk management strategies
    • Familiarity with the EA organizational landscape and decision-making processes
    • Proven ability to develop and implement strategies that enhance the effectiveness and impact of EA initiatives
  • Deep functional experience and extensive network in AI safety
    • Comprehensive understanding of the AI safety landscape, key challenges, and research priorities (e.g., evals, alignment, transparency & explainability, data and hardware security)
    • Proven track record of contributing to AI safety research, projects, or initiatives
    • Demonstrated success in engaging with key stakeholders to advance AI safety initiatives

Other abilities and attributes we look for

Great candidates will:

  • Strive to do the most good in all aspects of their work, including a relentless optimization focus and scope sensitivity
  • Have a proven ability to drive complex, ambiguous projects independently, expertly navigating stakeholder relationships and delivering high-impact results
  • Have an entrepreneurial mindset and a modest, hands-on attitude
  • Be interested in (or have experience with) setting up new organizations
  • Have epistemic humility and the ability to reason deeply, independently, and transparently. For example, they’re able to think quantitatively about uncertainty, quickly find arguments on both sides of complex issues, and skeptically evaluate claims
  • Communicate in a clear, information-dense, and calibrated way, with good reasoning transparency, both in writing and in person. For example, they’ll feel comfortable disagreeing with others, ask if something is not clear, and be willing to have honest, direct, and truth-seeking discussions
  • Have an excellent macro-level ability to think strategically about priorities
  • Have a strong micro-level ability to be proactive, diligent, solutions-focused, and detail-oriented
  • Have a strong work ethic, and be adept at working independently
  • Be direct and open about giving and receiving feedback, and highly growth-oriented
  • Help create a positive culture and build strong interpersonal relationships

Compensation and logistics

Compensation: The salary for the role is variable based on candidate experience, location, and scope of work. Junior applicants based in London can expect the range to typically be between 50,000–70,000 USD per year, and for very senior applicants the salary can rise up to 120,000 USD. We use an internal salary calculator to ensure fair wages within the team but we are open to negotiating the upper bound for candidates who are an exceptional fit and are likely to make exceptional contributions to organizational development. Essentially, we don’t want people to not apply to us because of salary concerns but we also primarily want staff motivated by the impact they can have in our roles.

Benefits:

  • We offer a comprehensive, location-adjusted benefits package to ensure that our employees' essential needs are met through income adjustment. This includes quality healthcare coverage and other critical benefits, tailored to the employee's country of residence
  • We provide an annual learning and development budget of up to 2,000 USD (pro-rated for fellows) and a 10% time allocation for personal growth and high-impact projects, with flexibility for particularly compelling opportunities
  • We provide extensive networking opportunities and career capital through exposure to senior staff and high-stakes projects with leading EA organizations
  • We have a humble, focused, and sustainable high-performance culture
  • As a startup, we offer unique opportunities to work closely with cFactual's executive staff and contribute to a wide range of impactful tasks and projects

This might be a great opportunity for you to have an outsized counterfactual impact within a dynamic start-up environment.

Work Location: We anticipate that successful candidates will be based remotely, and place no constraints on location aside from a 2-hour overlap of the workday with Central European Summer Time (GMT+2). cFactual’s current and future staff are based in various countries, but we try to co-locate regularly at client sites, in our respective cities, or before and after EAG conferences. cFactual staff are encouraged to travel for work roughly 4-12x per year depending on client needs.

Sponsorship: In many circumstances, we may not be able to sponsor employment visas. However, we are willing to explore this on a case-by-case basis with any candidate. If you would need an employment visa for a role at cFactual, please email [email protected] and we will look into your specific circumstance.

Start date: Late summer / early fall (Northern Hemisphere)

Term: We want to hire the most promising candidates and are willing to tailor working conditions based on your needs. Hence, we are open to full-time, part-time, or project-based contracting structures. We are also open to working with fellows (e.g., during a leave from their consulting firm for 1-6 months) or colleagues doing a tour of duty for 1 year.

Application process

Please submit your application here.

The selection process will consist of an application screening, an offline work test, an interview, reference checks, and a 1- or 2-day paid work trial, where you’ll work with us on real hiring and operations projects.

Deadline

The deadline to submit your application is July 21st, 2024.
