Position Description

Job Title: Social Media Manager

Position Status: Full time, salaried, exempt.

Work Location: Negotiable. We have an office in Washington, D.C. (currently closed during the COVID pandemic, with D.C. staff working from home) and are open to remote work from other geographic locations in the United States.

Free Press was created to give people a voice in the crucial decisions that shape our media. We’re focused on transforming media and technology to help create a just society.

We’re looking for a social media manager to develop and maintain the overall social media strategy for Free Press.  In this role, you will:

  • Distill complex policy issues into concise, relatable bites of content
  • Monitor news stories and trending topics, and maximize rapid response opportunities
  • Support program teams in developing high-performing content and campaigns
  • Know what’s new, exciting and ethical in the world of online organizing platforms and services

The social media manager reports to the digital director. This job requires flexibility in work schedule, generally aligning to Eastern Time zone business hours, and requires evening and weekend work during peak campaign cycles and in the lead up to special events. This is not an ideal position for someone who seeks a traditional 9am-5pm schedule. When the COVID-pandemic is under control, regular local, regional and national domestic travel will be required, including to events or meetings hosted by others.

Free Press is composed of two separate organizations, Free Press and Free Press Action Fund. Both entities share the same overall mission and employees will have time assigned to one or both entities. This job posting refers collectively to the two organizations under the name “Free Press.”

Primary responsibilities:

  • Develop and execute multi-channel social-media strategy. Schedule and post content at optimal times for engagement. Manage all inboxes and comment feeds. Engage with top fans and strengthen relationships with members.
  • Plan and develop content. Write, design and produce inspiring language and visuals in alignment with Free Press brand and creative standards. Plan and schedule this content for optimal performance, including live coverage of special events such as hearings, protests and conferences.
  • Analytics and testing: Conduct regular testing to analyze content and messaging effectiveness. Create weekly analytic reports that indicate engagement and growth.

 

  • Oversee online-ad campaigns: Work with consulting partners on the execution and implementation of our online-ad strategy.
  • Online fundraising: Support digital efforts to meet our annual online-fundraising goals. Develop and executive creative strategies to boost online giving.

 

  • Advance racial equity: Clearly and consistently articulate an understanding of racial equity and structural racism and the centrality of this analysis to the work Free Press does and how we operate. Integrate that knowledge into work projects and interactions by addressing structural implications and disproportionate impacts of policies, activities and decisions on race, class, gender and other group identities within the context of job responsibilities and projects.

Qualifications:

  • No minimum education is required, a bachelor’s degree may be an indicator of project management capacity.
  • 3 or more years of social media management experience including maintaining a campaign or organization’s social-media accounts.
  • Must have a demonstrated commitment to racial equity and experience working with communities of color.
  • Extensive experience in how to leverage-social media platforms for campaigns, as well as experience growing social media audiences and increasing engagement of online audiences.
  • Excellent writing skills, including the ability to distill complicated ideas into digestible content.
  • Experience with managing online events, using social-media metrics, managing online-advertising, and graphic design using Canva and Adobe Creative
  • Experience creating rapid response posts, graphics and video content
  • Strong interest in media and technology issues and demonstrated experience working on those or similar issues.
  • Demonstrated capacity for full-charge “ownership” of program or administrative areas that are integral to day-to-day social media functions.
  • Experience supervising volunteers or interns.
  • Experience liaising with designated counterparts in allied organizations.
  • Attention to detail, flexibility and demonstrated capacity to operate in a fast-paced environment.
  • Must have ability to succeed in a predominately remote office environment, including working with an off-site manager, adopting and maintaining strong digital security practices, and fostering connection and community with colleagues located throughout the U.S.

 

Compensation:

Free Press is committed to offering competitive pay and generous benefits, including group medical insurance, short- and long-term disability insurance, retirement benefits, health-reimbursement accounts and paid family leave. Annual paid time off is a total of nine weeks, including vacation, health-care leave and holidays.

 

This position is categorized as a “tier 2” position, in the context of five possible functional classifications at Free Press, ranging from coordinator (tier one) to executive (tier five).

 

The starting salary at Free Press for a social media manager who meets the above qualifications is $60,000-$65,000.  Starting salary is based on the selected candidate’s qualifications and experience. To counter pay inequality and uphold internal parity, we use a nonnegotiable starting salary system, while benchmarking our pay to highly competitive markets in the nonprofit sector.
