The National Endowment for Democracy (NED) is a 501(c)3 grantmaking foundation that receives an annual Congressional appropriation in excess of $310 million and is governed by a private, bipartisan Board of Directors. This unusual arrangement positions NED to play a unique role as America’s leading foundation for freedom, empowering the institution to be nimble, innovative, and risk-taking in support of democratic activists, civil society organizations, independent media, and the NED family core institutes (the International Republican Institute, the National Democratic Institute, the Center for International Private Enterprise, and the Solidarity Center).

We seek a motivated, energetic, organized, and resourceful Program Assistant, Europe who is a mission-oriented team player, and who would be excited to join a fast-paced Europe programs team. This position is based in Washington, D.C.

Position Summary:

The Program Assistant (PA) will provide day-to-day administrative and programmatic support to the Europe regional program staff.  This position reports to the Senior Director for Europe. This is an opportunity to join an ambitious institution and team committed to the cause of our time. The ideal candidate will be energized by the idea of being part of an expanding team supporting our brave partners on the frontlines of the fight for freedom and democracy around the world.

Responsibilities: 

·         Provide general administrative support to the staff of the Europe team;

·         Receive, process, and distribute incoming proposals and grantee materials;

·         Respond to general inquiries regarding the proposal process;

·         Maintain a database of contacts in the region;

·         Help organize meetings, roundtables, and other events on Europe-related topics;

·         Provide logistical support for staff and grantee travel;

·         Provide programmatic support, as appropriate, to the team’s Program Officers, Deputy Director, and Senior Director.

·    Assist, as appropriate, in preparing proposal summaries, budgets, and related materials for considering and awarding grants to nongovernmental organizations working on democracy assistance programs in the Europe region.

·         Other responsibilities and projects as assigned.

Qualifications:

o    Bachelor’s degree in international affairs, political science, international development, public administration, history or a related discipline is required;

o    0-2 years of administrative and/or programmatic experience, preferably in the nonprofit sector;

o    Experience in grant making and democratic development is desirable;

o    Proficient in the use of MS Office Suite.

o    Demonstrated interest in and knowledge of political and civil society issues in Central, Eastern and/or Southeast Europe;

o    Fluency (oral and written) in Russian desired; knowledge of a relevant regional language, especially languages used in the Southeast Europe, is desirable;

o    Related field experience in one or more countries in the region is desirable, not mandatory;

o    High degree of organization and initiative.

o    Works well in a team environment.

o    Attention to detail, and ability to multi-task;

o    Excellent writing, editorial, and oral communication ability.

o    Experience working with databases and analyzing statistics is desirable;

o    Authorized to work in the United States.

This position is part of the NED Bargaining Unit.

Located in Washington, D.C., the salary range for this role is $ 45,500 – 60,625 USD, plus benefits. The final offer for a successful candidate will be determined by a combination of factors, including, but not limited to, skill set, level of experience, education, and market considerations.
