Maintenance Assistant

Position summary: The Maintenance Assistant is part of a Maintenance team at MCC Akron Office and Welcoming Place, with primary responsibility for planning and executing construction projects, keeping the department equipment and supplies inventory, and handling daily office maintenance needs.

Essential: Basic literacy and ability to do fundamental math; High School Diploma. Possess a valid driver's license.  Over three months experience. Experience in maintenance, building trades-carpentry, electrical, plumbing, HVAC, power tools and equipment used in the building trades. Basic computer skills.

Preferred: Experience with Microsoft Word and Excel. High School Diploma. Electrical or plumbing skills.

Position scope duties and responsibilities: This position has no direct supervisory responsibilities.

Key Responsibilities: Maintenance/Technical 95%, Misc Duties 5%.

Specific tasks and duties:

Maintenance/Technical 95%

Works on construction and building repair projects, including carpentry, drywall, electrical, painting, plumbing, and HVAC work. Has responsibility for data entry and data management in Maintenance’s computer files, including files related to inventory management of the department’s tools, machinery, equipment, and materials. Interior and exterior painting, Landscaping, mowing, Remove snow and ice from sidewalks, as well as roofs, as needed.  Routine maintenance in all buildings  Assists with vehicle maintenance needs  Occasional Airport trip.

Misc Duties 5%

This person will work well with others, be able to follow instructions and to take the initiative to solve complicated maintenance problems with minimal supervision. Needs flexibility and creativity to meet constantly changing situations. Needs people skills to deal with requests from staff and visitors for maintenance assistance. Will consult nearly daily with supervisor.

Must work occasional evening or weekend duty when emergency repairs or snow/ice removal is needed.

Other duties as assigned on a temporary basis.

Travel expectations: Travel is required up to 25% per year.  With less than 30 nights spent away per year. Travel is both regional and local.

Physical activity/demands: This position requires medium work that includes moving objects up to 50 pounds occasionally; heavy work that includes moving objects up to 100 pounds or more; ascending or descending stairs/ladders or the like regularly; remaining in a stationary position, often standing or sitting for prolonged periods of time regularly; moving about to accomplish tasks or move from one worksite to another regularly; light work that includes moving objects up to 20 pounds; repeating motions that may include the wrists, hands and/or fingers regularly; operating machinery and/or power tools regularly; operating motor vehicles or heavy equipment regularly; assessing the accuracy, neatness and thoroughness of work assigned regularly; carry, bend, work on ladders and roofs regularly.

Environmental Conditions: This position is exposed to Noisy Environment occasionally; Hazardous conditions occasionally; Poor Ventilation occasionally; Poor Ventilation occasionally; small and/or enclosed spaces occasionally; low temperatures regularly; high temperatures regularly; outdoor elements such as precipitation and wind regularly.
