Consultant on Stress and Resilience

Human Rights Watch is seeking a consultant to help the organization on issues related to staff stress and resilience. The consultant is needed on average 1-5 hours per week to provide professional mental health services and support for Human Rights Watch staff (including fellows, interns, and consultants) and their partners, as well as contribute to organizational discussions and events on staff wellbeing. The consultant may need to be on call 24/7 in some situations requiring urgent assistance.

Candidates must be able to provide support by appointment in the Americas and Asia/Pacific time zones.


Counseling Services
Support Human Rights Watch staff by:

1. Providing mental health counseling either in-person or remotely by phone or video;
2. Providing referrals to external mental health professionals;
3. Providing pre- and post-project debriefings to staff;
4. Offering trauma-informed mental health support following security or other incidents; and
5. Ensuring confidentiality and maintaining clinical records.

Organizational Support
Help foster a culture of resilience and stress prevention among HRW staff by:

1. Developing tools to help staff manage stress on the individual and team level;
2. Working with the Human Resources team to develop/provide input on policies to reduce stress and build resilience;
3. Providing trainings for staff on stress and resilience;
4. Providing guidance and training for managers on how to support staff with stress reduction;
5. Visiting HRW offices occasionally, as needed;
6. Attending the annual organization-wide retreat;
7. Identifying referrals to other resources (e.g. Toastmasters, Alcoholics Anonymous, resources for human rights abuse survivors, and guest speakers);
8. Preparing and presenting periodic reports, including types of issues addressed and usage by different parts of the organization, to the HR team and Stress and Resilience Task Force;
9. Meeting with the internal task force on stress and resilience;
10. Working closely and in conjunction with other HRW stress counselors;
11. Providing support to the Americas and Asia-Pacific time zones; and
12. Meeting regularly with the HR team to collaborate on how to best support staff.


Education: An advanced degree in clinical psychology, a Master’s of Social Work with state licensure (LCSW), or an equivalent degree is required.

Experience: 10 or more years of experience working with primary and secondary trauma is required. Strong preference will be given to candidates with experience in the human rights or humanitarian sectors, and familiarity with international organizations. A history of working with others to improve organizational culture and staff wellbeing is highly desirable, as is experience working with individuals from diverse backgrounds.

Fluency in English is required. Proficiency in Spanish is highly preferred.

1. Experience working with people who live/work in a volatile security environments is desired.
2. Experience training individuals and teams on ways to boost resilience and manage stress is desired.
3. Experience working with and providing support to a diverse, international staff is desired.
4. Excellent critical thinking skills and the ability to collaborate with staff on discussing different approaches for support is desired.
5. Excellent interpersonal skills being able to establish rapport with a staff member and gain their trust is desired.
6. Familiarity with peer support systems is desired.
7. Knowledge of substance use disorders and experience counseling individuals who experience them is desired.
8. Experience with providing support to survivors of gender based and intimate partner violence is desired.
9. Familiarity with organizational duty of care standards is desired.
10. Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to communicate with a diverse international audience are desired.
11. High integrity and the ability to honor the confidentiality of all interactions is desired.
