The African Leadership Centre (ALC), Atrocities Watch Africa (AWA), the International Refugee Rights Initiative (IRRI) and the Pan African Lawyers Union (PALU) are seeking applicants for a Communications and Outreach Officer under a newly established the Africans for the Horn of Africa (Af4HA) Initiative intended to prevent and respond to mass atrocity in Sudan, South Sudan, Somalia, Ethiopia, and Eritrea. 

The Communications and Outreach Officer will identify, plan and conduct advocacy and outreach efforts to promote policy responses being advocated by the Af4HA initiative. Advocacy interventions will be evidence-based, reflecting monitoring and documentation of responding to conflict-related human rights violations and mass atrocity crimes in the region. The Communications and Outreach Officer will be hosted by AWA and will report to the Program Officer. 

Responsibilities: 

1. Provide substantive guidance on outreach strategies to raise awareness about and build support for responding to ongoing conflict-related human rights violations and mass atrocity crimes in the region. 

2. Contribute policy recommendations and analysis to thematic briefings and longer reports and any other advocacy products. 

3. Synthesize and distil information gathered by the Af4HA Initiative into digestible and accessible content for the general public and media. 

4. Draft advocacy and media products such as press releases, joint reports, and op-eds and coordinate with partners for sign-on. 

5. Support Af4HA members and other partners with the creation of accessible materials for awareness raising and advocacy. 

6. Represent and speak on behalf of the Af4HA Initiative at panel events, presentations and key stakeholder meetings. 

7. Engage with the public through both traditional and social media including holding online and offline events including protests, demonstrations, vigils, candlelight vigils, panels and debates. 

Qualifications: 

Education: A degree in law, public policy, international relations, political science, development studies or a related field is required. Academic focus on international human rights law and international humanitarian law and or additional studies are highly desirable. 

Experience: A minimum of five years of advocacy experience working on human rights issues or conflict dynamics in the priority countries of the Af4HA Initiative is required. 

1. Excellent oral and written communication skills in English is required, with knowledge of other regional languages desirable. 

2. Demonstrated experience in conducting communications and outreach support for advocacy campaigns required. 

3. Knowledge of regional and international advocacy mechanisms is desirable.
