POSITION TITLE: Agrochemicals & Fossil Fuels Campaigner or Senior Campaigner

PROGRAM: Climate & Energy

FOCUS AREA: Agrochemicals

SUPERVISOR: Deputy Director, Climate & Energy

LOCATION: Geneva, Switzerland; Washington, DC; or remote with timezone alignment

SALARY RANGE: Campaigner: $50,000 - $65,000/year (depending on qualifications)

Senior Campaigner: $61,000 - $80,000/year (depending on qualifications)

SUMMARY DESCRIPTION:

Industrial, chemical-intensive agriculture and fossil fuels are deeply intertwined. Fossil fuels are foundational to the petrochemical sector that manufactures chemical-based fertilizers and pesticides from fossil fuel feedstocks. These agricultural chemicals (agrochemicals) are thus integral to the industrial agriculture food chain. While the climate consequences of burning fossil fuels and the crisis of plastic pollution have garnered increasing public attention, the role and impact of agrochemicals as another form of fossil fuel pollution has remained comparatively overlooked.

As our first Agrochemicals & Fossil Fuels Campaigner or Senior Campaigner, you will use expertise and advocacy strategies to protect food systems, strengthen agriculture policies, and address health concerns around agrochemicals and fossil fuels. You will support this effort by building on existing work to map and establish the links between agrochemicals and fossil fuels; translating existing research into digestible content and campaignable tools; and identifying research needs to fill in specific knowledge gaps in order to link, educate, engage, and thus cross-pollinate different movements to accelerate the end of the toxic fossil economy through the lens of agrochemicals.

With your assistance, CIEL will partner in developing campaigns and aligned messages for civil society and other partners, as well as useful and accessible information for media and decision-makers to confront the overuse of agrochemicals, safeguard human rights, and promote food sovereignty, climate justice, and overall ecosystem integrity. Your work will guide and support cross-movement strategies and synergies to advance campaigns and policy advocacy in key geographies.

While the job duties are similar for a Campaigner or Senior Campaigner, a Senior Campaigner is expected to bring significantly more expertise and experience in international coalition work and movement building on relevant or related subject matters. A Senior Campaigner will also be expected to take leadership in campaign development and strategy setting and take a more prominent role in representing CIEL in external and media spaces. The exact job title will be determined based on the qualifications of the candidate.
