Go beyond a US-centered perspective to spark meaningful global change.
Named one of the top international affairs programs by the Foreign Policy Association, The New School’s Studley Graduate Programs in International Affairs are distinctive in the New School tradition: critical, engaged, and iconoclastic.
Students at The New School in New York City develop a critical perspective on global issues and benefit from field-based learning, small classes, distinguished faculty, and flexible study options. International Affairs students have diverse academic backgrounds – from global and area studies to the social sciences and media studies – and they collaborate to design new solutions to global issues. Students can pursue their degree on a full-time or part-time basis.
New Approaches for a New Kind of International Affairs
The 42-credit MA degree is designed for students beginning their careers in international affairs. MA students select from five concentrations, enabling them to specialize in a particular area of international affairs:
- Cities and Social Justice
- Conflict and Security
- Governance and Rights
- Media and Culture
The 30-credit modular MS degree allows early- to mid-career professionals to tailor their studies to their specific interests and career goals. The innovative curriculum allows students to select one Subject Module and one Critical Tools and Analysis Module. Potential combinations include:
- Humanitarianism + Geographic Information Systems
- Global Advocacy + Media Production
- Sustainable Development + Participatory Development
- Development Policy + Economic Analysis
All master’s students studying international affairs have the opportunity to gain hands-on experience through the International Field Program. In the course of nine weeks, students work and conduct research with community organizations, NGOs, and governmental agencies at field sites around the world. Additionally, the optional United Nations Summer Study program puts students on the ground in the UN and in New York City. The seven-week program goes beyond conventional security and diplomacy issues to investigate development, human rights, humanitarian action, peacebuilding, and environmental issues.
